How and when NARA was born?

On my first trip to Japan I visited the city of Nara and the experience of being there was a new approach in my perception towards balance and beauty. The years passed and I combined in this project, old personal searches around beauty and amazement. This sensation experienced in Nara, is the same that I experience when I visit markets of objects and used clothes. Thus NARA Garments was born and my project takes shape in 2023 in Zurich.

How did you get into vintage clothing?

During my teenage years I was obsessed with funk music and the style they had in the 70's but in my small town it was impossible to find those clothes in normal stores. One day I went into a store that
doesn't exist today in my city. I remember the clothes in huge drawers and I started to search and find parts of the imaginary I had in my head. I still remember that feeling of astonishment and discovery, this possible surprise that moved me around the world, with a constant search.

What makes NARA different from other vintage brands?

My difference lies in how I choose each NARA item and how I give value to the individual search for each garment. But above all the value I place on human energy. For me each piece is valuable and each one hides an infinite network of micro processes, such as fabric manufacturing, sourcing of materials, creation of buttons, zips, linings and more. All these steps were created independently and then unified into a garment. I like to imagine that I am a channel of connection between two strangers, the clothes and a
new owner.

  • POP-UPS

The NARA Pop-ups are an invitation to get to know our curatorial work, and also to get to know the locations we choose. The places cease to be anonymous and are re-discovered and re-signified for all those who visit. One of the first experiences was in an art gallery (Unort) and others in fairs and markets.

By moving in different spaces around the city, we reaffirm the idea of the continuous transit that exists in everything, just like us, clothes also have their own movement and material existence.
